Revolution 2012
CSAs and Lake Land
Community Shared Agriculture (CSA) is an alternative local food funding/marketing model that was initiated in Canada about 20 years ago to grow ecologically friendly food and relationships among communities and their farmers. By making a financial commitment to a farmer in advance of the growing season, consumers become "members" (or "shareholders," or "subscribers") of the CSA. The buyers receive a weekly basket of seasonal produce and farmers have a financial commitment to assist in planting and maintaining and harvesting their gardens. CSAs address two main issues:
- Lessening the risk farmers bear in leading the food production and distribution process.
- Raising consumers' awareness of the provenance of their food supply.
Community Shared Agriculture is an approach to growing and purchasing food products in which the farmer and consumer work co-operatively. The farmer wins a guaranteed market; the consumer gains high quality, fresh food, as it becomes available. You also get to know your local farmer, learn about farming and what it takes to grow and harvest your food.
The Lake Land Model
Revolution is about change. It's about following one's visions and dreams to obtain a desired goal and the strategies needed to bring it to fruition. It's about many things, but revolution is mostly about people, people believing in an ideal and making the commitment to participate in the evolution to achieve that goal.
My dream has always been for Lake Land to have its own production kitchen and culinary studio; a place to transform our wonderful local meats & produce into a variety of delicious, healthy, high quality choices to take home or enjoy right here. A place to make food that is wholesome, good for you and a pleasure to eat, food that has a list of ingredients you recognize and can pronounce, food without compromise.
Of course, the biggest challenge for a project like this is raising the capital. So we are funding our new building based on the principles of Community Shared Agriculture (CSA). Like other CSA programs, a subscription entails a prepayment in return for future delivery of product.
This is our goal. Everyone who funds us has the opportunity to share in the ideals and bounty of this revolution; securing a promising future for not only Lake Land, but for all of the farmers who provide us with their wonderful products, the butchers and other tradespeople that we depend on and for yourself and your family. By participating we are giving you the opportunity to commit to the vision and to have a voice in how good food is produced.
So if you support local agriculture and believe that it is still possible to grow and make good, wholesome food that is a pleasure to eat, perhaps this initiative is for you. If you enjoy eating good food and serving it to your family and if you like to know where your food comes from and how it is grown, then I know this is a movement you can support. It's a win-win situation for you; a great return on your investment and you get to eat very, very well!
